Based on new technologies The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) were adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in co-operation with other competent authorities.
Contrary to the previous system the carried radio equipment does not depend on the size of a vessel but on ship’s area of operation:
- Sea area A1: Within coverage of at least one VHF coast station in which continuous DSC alerting is available (about 20-30nm,i.e. line of sight).
- Sea area A2: Within coverage of a MF coast station operating in 2-3MHz band in which continuous DSC alerting is available (about l00nm).
- Sea area A3: Area excluding A1 and A2 but within coverage of an Inmarsat geostationary satellite coverage in which continuous alerting is available (generally defined as being within lattitudes 70N and 70S).
- Sea area A4: An area outside sea areas A1, A2 and A3, i.e. outside the Inmarsat geostationary satellite coverage (polar regions).
